So...Is Da Vinci Sugar Free Syrup Safe?

I've recently had some people asking about Da Vinci Sugar Free Syrup. So I figured I would do some research, check out the product, and let you know what I found about it.

After only a brief look at the ingredients list of any Da Vinci product, some problems arise.

The Ingredients

Although the ingredients list on this product is short, it's potent.

This sugar free syrup contains Sodium Benzoate, which is a preservative that is currently under investigation by the FDA (even though it was previously approved).

M.D. Kristie Leong stated that "sodium benzoate forms a chemical known as benzene when in the presence of vitamin C. Benzene not only causes damage to DNA, the genetic material, it's also a known carcinogen and appears to play a role in a variety of diseases due to it's DNA damaging capabilities" in her eHow Article on the subject.

Sounds like a bit of a problem to me.

This product also contains Splenda (Sucralose). I can't even begin to tell you how bad Splenda is for you, but if you would like to learn more about it you can read my Danger of Splenda article.

Final Thoughts

I really don't need to do any more research than this. A simple look at the ingredients list for this product shows that it is not something that I could possibly promote on this site.

Although you might not get terribly sick or anything like that from it, this sugar free syrup is not something that I will condone in any way.

Natural Sugar Substitute Of The Month: Erythritol

Erythritol is a great substitute for sugar, although it is only about 65% as sweet as sugar, so you'll need to use more of it in order to properly bake with it.
